Position Summary:

This position will be responsible for managing the Health, Safety and Environmental Affairs Department (HSE) that includes developing and leading implementation of the strategic HSE site plan for the Rodolphe Street, Durham site services to include Security and Housekeeping.  The position is responsible for maintaining 24/7 emergency response plan for the Site.  The position will interact with all functions housed at the site, including Manufacturing, Facilities, Maintenance, Engineering, Industrialization, R&D and hosted regional and global functions.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop strategic direction for the site’s HSE program to include promoting continuous improvement of the site’s HSE performance
  • Demonstrate effective cost savings actions for HSE services
  • Lead the site’s effort to support the company’s sustainability initiatives
  • Provide necessary resources for HSE representation for site projects, new equipment and procedures
  • Implement, monitor and control site HSE near miss/safety suggestion, and inspection programs to ensure corrective actions, inspections and evaluations are performed with potential negative impacts minimized
  • Ensure required regulator reports, permits, surveys, regulatory fees and compliance plans are completed and submitted as required
  • Serve as lead technical resource to Durham site regarding general safety, OSHA compliance, ISO compliance biosafety, chemical safety, radiation safety and environmental compliance
  • Create and organize HSE training curriculums with action plan for ensuring completion by affected departments
  • Develop and coordinate emergency plans and response procedures to include ownership of the Business Continuity Plan (BCP) for a 24/7 operation
  • Manage compliance with federal and state, as well as bioMerieux medical surveillance to ensure employees maintain medical reviews, occupational and non-occupational medical restrictions as specified
  • Establish North American and Global HSE alliances by participating as a Global HSE Steering Team member.
  • Manage site security program that includes the implementation of on-site service supplier authorization, badge access procedures, parking permit program, routine safety/security walks and safety equipment inspections
  • Lead site waste management program designed to continually minimize impact to landfill, through alternative waste disposal, compost, waste to energy, recycling, electronic waste, etc.

 

Studies and Experience:

  • BS and 5 five years of relevant HSE experience required; BS degree in a Health, Safety, Environmental Field of study preferred.
  • Knowledge of ISO 14001 & 45001 or other management systems strongly preferred.
  • Experience in a high technology manufacturing environment preferred.
  • CSP or CIH certification preferred.

 

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication skills- ability to influence, educate and train on HSE Procedures
  • Ability  to read and interpret technical literature and stay abreast of changing regulatory landscape;
  • Ability  to develop a strategy to determine action plans for risk reduction
  • Ability  to review the regulatory landscape to identify and mitigate non-compliant conditions
  • Demonstrated computer skills  (i.e. MS Office)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to train others
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Ability to influence others

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to ascend/descend stairs, ladders, ramps, and the like.
  • Ability to wear PPE correctly most of the day.
