Summary of Job Description

This is a senior level mechanical engineering position with an emphasis on engineering design of complex medical instruments.  This individual will collaborate with R&D engineering staff and other cross-functional departments to design, document, prototype, and test complex medical instruments.  This individual may also take responsibility for the transfer to manufacturing of medical instruments.

 

Main Accountabilities:

  • Through his/her expertise, contributes to the research and/or development of specific technologies, products and/or services within the given schedule, budget and scope constraints and ensuring adherence to established scientific good practices and/or design control policies
  • Bears technical or business responsibility for projects be defining, developing adapted approaches; provides complete vision of how to tackle technical or business problems with the scope of the projects.
  • Works globally within the department to develop, improve and promote procedures and methods that facilitates the research and development of quality products or services and mitigates product related risks
  • Provides recommendations of improvements which integrate business criteria and assure quality assurance policies and good scientific practices respect.
  • Accountable for the technical or business output of a group of engineers (internal or contractors), guiding their work, tracking and reporting on the status of developments the group is in charge of appropriately coordinate and delegate task; mentor less experienced engineers in their technical or business development
  • Provides input into Performance Management on a project by project basis
  • Ability to assess design choices with respect to functional requirements and business constraints.
  • Strong cross-functional collaborative design and project skills.
  • Provides assistance to more senior engineering staff to assure that project deadlines are met.
  • Assigns tasks to junior engineers and ensures their timely completion.
  • Takes responsibility for the design control of the assembled instruments and their compliance with design specifications and standard quality and compliance procedures.
  • Actively participates with Systems Integration (Verification), Product Validation, and Instrument Manufacturing through the development process.
  • Ability to mentor junior staff, including co-ops.
  • Provides support to Verification activities.
  • Leads the Design Transfer processes.

 

Position Requirements:

  • Experience with designing complex mechanisms, components, and assemblies of machines with automation.
  • Candidate must be well grounded in mechanical engineering design principles with demonstrated hands-on design competency.
  • Participates in early project phases to determine functional requirements and early design concepts.
  • Participates in the development of risk analyses (dFMEAs), functional specifications, and detailed product specifications.
  • Generated detailed CAD designs using sound engineering principles and design for manufacturability.
  • Perform theoretical engineering analysis on prospective designs.

Typical experience, skills and qualifications:

  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent, with a minimum of 10 years’ work experience in new product development OR Associates Degree/technical certificate with 15+ years’ experience (including 2+ years’ experience in a leadership role) designing mechanical systems, equipment and components for the medical device or diagnostics industry or a relevant field. 
  • Training/proficiency in Mechanical CAD (SolidWorks preferred), PLM systems (Windchill preferred), Design for Manufacturability, engineering drawing standards including GD&T, CAD modeling, rapid prototyping.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience engineering parts that use common manufacturing methods and materials, such as injection-molded plastic (highly desired), machining, and sheet metal.
