Position Summary

The Mechanical Engineer  is a mechanical design engineering position in the R&D department with an emphasis on engineering design of complex medical instruments.  This individual will collaborate with R&D engineering staff to design, document, prototype, and test complex medical instruments. 

 

Main Accountabilities:

  • Assists in the definition, proof of concept, design, development, implementation and/or support of technical or business solutions by performing specific research activities or developments within the scope of the assigned activity
  • Assumes responsibility for the identification of errors and/or related problem solving in order to identify the necessary activities to provide a solution
  • Ensures quality of deliverables by following good design practices and departmental procedures for design control and/or good scientific practices to ensure scientific relevance
  • Creates appropriate documentation such as scientific communication, reports, meeting reports and/or other relevant reports within the function
  • Defines priorities within the scope of the assigned activities to ensure timelines and quality of project(s) he (she’s) involved in
  • Explains/trains users/collaborators throughout the organization in new functional approaches, methods, and tools.

 

Position Requirements:

  • Experience with designing complex mechanisms, components, and assemblies.
  • Candidate must be well grounded in mechanical engineering design principles with demonstrated hands-on design competency working with complex medical instrumentation.
  • Strong collaborative design and project skills.
  • Perform theoretical engineering analysis on prospective designs.
  • Provide assistance to more senior engineering staff to assure that project deadlines are met.
  • Has experience with engineering design, creates or modifies processes and procedures in accordance with internal needs, design control guidelines and Quality requirements within the company’s quality system and regulated FDA environment.
  • Takes responsibility for the design control of the assembled instruments and their compliance with design specifications and standard quality and compliance procedures.
  • Provides support to Verification activities.
  • Actively participates in Design Transfer processes.

 

Typical experience, skills and qualifications:

  • Education/Experience:  BS in Mechanical, Industrial or Manufacturing Engineering,  3-5 years’ work experience OR Associates Degree/technical certificate with 8+ years’ experience designing mechanical systems, equipment and components for the medical device or diagnostics industry or a relevant field.
  • 10+ years of experience designing mechanical systems, equipment and components for the medical device or diagnostics industry or relevant field will be considered in lieu of education.
  • Training/proficiency in Mechanical CAD (Solidworks preferred), PLM systems (Windchill preferred), Design for Manufacturability, engineering drawing standards including GD&T, CAD modeling, rapid prototyping.
  • Experience engineering parts that use common manufacturing methods and materials, such as injection-molded plastic (highly desired), machining, and sheet metal.
