The problem is already very real and immediate; for example, bloodstream infection leading to sepsis is now responsible for more than half of all deaths in hospitals and is the most expensive condition treated in hospitals. The sepsis mortality rate increases >6% every hour without effective antibiotic treatment. Yet, despite the life and death urgency, and healthcare cost impacts, current methodologies require 3 days to determine the correct antibiotic.

Specific Diagnostics, a bioMerieux company, has developed a breakthrough solution to rapidly determine the effective antibiotic treatment for the bloodstream and other acute infections. Used for bloodstream infection Specific’s solution provides results 2 days sooner (1 day vs 3 days).

POSITION SUMMARY

We are currently seeking an experienced, thorough, and reliable Chemist to join our team. You will collaborate with our chemistry R&D department to develop or AST(Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing) sensor improve the performance ultimately providing an innovative and reliable product to our customers. We prefer candidates who have at least four years of professional lab experience with at least two in the biotechnology or medical device industry and who can work independently under tight deadlines.

 PRIMARY DUTIES

1. Work in a cleanroom environment alongside manufacturing staff to conduct sensor development experiments
2. Review experimental protocols and make revisions as necessary
3. Operate test equipment for functional testing of chemical sensors
4. Accurately record all experimental data as directed
5. Ensure all samples are properly disposed of according to company and environmental policies
6. Follow good safety and laboratory practices
7. Perform lab maintenance activities as required
8. Read and follow experimental protocols and make suggestions for improvements to procedure
9. Prepare short progress reports and data summaries

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS

Bachelor's degree in chemistry, analytical chemistry, Bioengineering or a related field
·      5+ years of experience in a laboratory setting - or Masters Degree with 3+ Years
·      Biotechnology or medical device industry experience preferred
·      Experience working in regulatory environment preferred.
·      Solid working knowledge of analytical method development and validation
·      Attention to detail, able to quickly understand new concepts
·      Excellent communication and reporting skills
·      Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and databases
·      Fundamental application of statistics in handling scientific data a plus

The estimated salary range for this role based in California is between $100,000 and $120,000 annually. This role is eligible to receive a variable annual bonus based on company, team, and individual performance per bioMerieux’s bonus program. This range may differ from ranges offered for similar positions elsewhere in the country given differences in cost of living. Actual compensation within this range is determined based on the successful candidate’s experience and will be presented in writing at the time of the offer.
