Position Summary:

This position will be responsible for managing the Health, Safety and Environmental Affairs Department (HSE) which includes developing and leading implementation of the strategic HSE site plan for the Manufacturing Site (Rodolphe), Commercial Operations Site (Hamlin), Durham site services including Security. The position is responsible for maintaining 24/7 emergency response plan for the Durham Sites. The position will interact with all functions at both sites, including Manufacturing, Facilities, Maintenance, Engineering, Industrialization, R&D, Commercial Operations, and hosted regional and global functions. This role will be a key stakeholder in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects and initiatives.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • The HSE department priorities are to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local Safety and Environment regulations (ISO 14001 / 45001), bioMérieux Global HSE policies, and industry best practices to protect the team members, visitors, and company property.  
  • Develop the strategic direction for the HSE program to include promoting continuous improvement of the HSE performance inclusive of both Safety Leading Metrics and Environmental Leading Metrics.
  • Support of all team members and processes at the bioMérieux, Inc. Durham sites.
    • Includes Rodolphe Manufacturing with R&D and Hamlin Commercial Operations.
  • Drive Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Sustainability projects and initiatives.
    • Lead, Manage, and Support Environmental Evolution projects and initiatives.
  • Provide necessary resources for HSE representation for site projects, new equipment, and procedures.
  • Lead HSE near miss/safety suggestion and inspection programs to ensure corrective actions, inspections, and evaluations are executed.
  • Ensure required regulator reports, permits, surveys, regulatory fees and compliance plans are completed and submitted as required.
  • Serve as lead technical resource to Durham site regarding general safety, OSHA compliance, ISO compliance biosafety, chemical safety, radiation safety and environmental compliance.
  • Support teams who manage controlled lab environments in Industrialization and R&D, inclusive of a BSL-3 lab, a warehouse, and machine shops in Maintenance.
  • Create and manage HSE training curriculums with action plan for ensuring completion by impacted departments.
  • Develop and coordinate emergency plans and response procedures to include ownership of the Business Continuity Plan (BCP) for a 24/7 operation.
  • Manage compliance with federal and state, medical surveillance to ensure employees maintain medical reviews, occupational, and non-occupational medical restrictions as specified.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with HSE leaders in North American and Global HSE teams. 
  • Manage site security program, on-site service supplier authorization, badge access procedures, parking permit program, routine safety/security walks, and safety equipment inspections.
  • Lead site waste management program designed to continually minimize impact to landfill, through alternative waste disposal, compost, waste to energy, recycling, electronic waste, and other applicable waste streams.
  • Identify and lead cost savings projects and act as a Stakeholder for Continuous Improvement projects

 

Education and Experience:

  • BS with seven (7) years of relevant HSE experience required; BS degree in a Health, Safety, Environmental Field of study preferred, or BS in an Engineering OR
    • MS with five (5) years of relevant HSE experience required; MS degree in a Health, Safety, Environmental Field of study preferred, or MS in an Engineering.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience with continuous improvement preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience with Environmental Sustainability initiatives preferred.
  • Experience in a high throughput manufacturing environment preferred. 
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification preferred

 

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Requires excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to effectively train others.
  • Individual must possess strong leadership skills and have the ability to effectively influence others.
  • Knowledge of ISO 14001 & 45001 or other management systems strongly preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical literature and remain current on regulatory landscape.
  • Ability to develop a strategy to determine action plans for risk reduction.
  • Ability to review the regulatory landscape to identify and mitigate non-compliant conditions.
  • Demonstrated computer skills: MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Project.
