The estimated salary range for this role based in California is between $136,000 and $163,000 annually. This role is eligible to receive a variable annual bonus based on company, team, and individual performance per bioMerieux’s bonus program. This range may differ from ranges offered for similar positions elsewhere in the country given differences in cost of living. Actual compensation within this range is determined based on the successful candidate’s experience and will be presented in writing at the time of the offer.

 The Company

The world is facing a medical crisis, bacteria are increasingly evolving resistance to even our strongest antibiotics. The problem is already very real and immediate; for example, bloodstream infection leading to sepsis is now responsible for more than half of all deaths in hospitals and is the most expensive condition treated in hospitals. The sepsis mortality rate increases >6% every hour without effective antibiotic treatment. Yet, despite the life and death urgency, and healthcare cost impacts, current methodologies require 3 days to determine the correct antibiotic.

Specific Diagnostics, a bioMerieux company, has developed a breakthrough solution to rapidly determine the effective antibiotic treatment for the bloodstream and other acute infections. Used for bloodstream infection Specific’s solution provides results 2 days sooner (1 day vs 3 days).

The Job

We are seeking a Senior Process Engineer to join our strong team of Scientists in the Chemistry R&D Department. The Product Development Engineer works to meet deadlines in a dynamic environment and has the temperament to operate proactively and collaboratively in a team, in support of research and development activities. Main responsibilities will focus on the development of colorimentric sensors including assessment of critical quality attributes, defining specifications and verifying them in collaboration with microbiologists, software engineers, process engineers. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Work on product development projects related to current and future systems
• Acquire deep understanding of current product chemistry
• Work with quality mindset to assess critical quality attributes and critical process parameters
• Identify criticality of components through risk assessment
• DOE experiments to establish boundaries
• Works with the Chemistry R&D team to develop and recommend new formulas and technologies to achieve cost-effectiveness and improved product quality for existing and future products
• Manage a team of 1 or more junior chemists
• Operate following product development project guidance: write detailed documentation, set requirements for new products, run verification...
• Read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, scientific procedures, and regulatory guidelines.
• Act as an exemplary lab and team member. Proactively teach, coordinate, collaborate, and communicate with supervisors and peers within and across teams and functional groups for lab activities, cleaning, equipment use, specific assigned tasks and projects, and sharing of knowledge, skills, and ideas.
• Lead investigations and complex experiments, as well as protocol and process development, optimization, revision, and execution. Play an active role in anticipating, identifying, and mitigating risks or hazards in processes, experiments and projects.
• Use data and critical thinking to evaluate performance and/or deficiencies in products and experiments. Propose strategies and solutions for technical and operational issues when deficiencies are identified.
• Exercise good judgment and prioritization in time and task management, experimental design and execution, and presentation of results and outcomes to peers and leadership. Be accountable for task completion and follow-through to maintain project goals and timelines.
• Demonstrate proficiency in written and oral communication of results, study protocols and reports.
• Demonstrates potential for technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others, and independent thought. Ensure proper documentation for regulatory compliance.

QUALIFICATIONS

Training and Education:

Required: Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a related field.

Experience: 

For individuals with a Bachelor’s degree, 5+ years of directly related experience is required. For individual's with a Master's degree or above, 3+ years of directly related experience is required.

Previous experience with the following is preferred:

• Experience in an FDA-regulated industry, preferably medical device.
• Product Development
• Chemical Formulation
• Analytical Chemistry
• Experience with vapor and/or liquid chemical sensors and sensor development
• Knowledge of Six Sigma and DOE
• Statistical analysis

Skills:

• Excellent chemical hygiene
