Job Summary

The Analytical Chemist II role supports the routine preparation and analysis of raw materials, intermediates, and finished products with the goal of improving development and manufacturing processes. Commonly used analytical techniques include but are not limited to High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Ion Chromatography, Mass Spectrometry, Inductively Coupled Plasma, and spectroscopy. This position requires an individual with demonstrated experience with analytical method development and validation as well as the ability to analyze complex data sets and generate technical documentation. Duties require collaboration with several departments, including Quality Control, Research and Development, Manufacturing and Regulatory to develop and ensure timely completion of projects. The Analytical Chemist II will help develop and implement laboratory procedures specific to analytical chemistry operations. The Analytical Chemist II may meet with upper management to discuss new projects and department goals This position will not normally receive specific instruction for routine tasks and is expected to rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. This position may receive general instructions on new assignments. This position may provide guidance to junior team members on new assignments. This is a full-time exempt position.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Perform all work for assigned projects/experiments in compliance with company policies and within the guidelines of the company’s Quality System.
  2. Uses professional concepts to contribute to the development of company concepts and principles and to achieve objectives in creative and effective ways.
  3. Guide, train, and mentor new and junior team members.
  4. Routine determination of analyte concentrations to support quality and stability of biochemical reagents used in the performance of PCR.
  5. Generate technical reports, work instruction documents (WIDs) and standard operating procedures (SOPs) as needed.
  6. Contribute to the development and implementation of laboratory procedures and in the management of laboratory resources that support analytical chemistry functions.
  7. Ensure analytical instruments are calibrated and maintained appropriately.
  8. Maintain knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories in analytical chemistry and contribute to identification of analytical method opportunities in collaboration with key stakeholders from other departments.
  9. May include role as subject matter expert (SME) on some projects.
  10. May advise upper management on research and development projects.
  11. May contribute to literature, conferences, and development of patent applications.
  12. Initiate, execute, and manage the development and validation of new and established analytical methods to support sustainability objectives for biochemical reagents.
  13. Collaborate with other scientists and personnel in various company departments to develop strategies and experiments, share resources, communicate progress, problem-solve, and resolve technical issues.

Supplemental Data

  • Works full time onsite.
  • Ability to adjust or move objects up to 30 pounds in all directions.

Training and Education

  • Requires a PhD in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry or closely related scientific discipline.
  • Exceptional non-PhDs, BS with 10+ years of experience or MS with 8+ years of experience in a research and development environment may be included.

Experience

  • Previous work experience in a diagnostics/pharmaceutical development laboratory is desirable.
  • Experience/exposure to regulated environments is highly desirable to facilitate interactions with manufacturing and tech transfer activities.
  • Requires practical applied experience with spectroscopic methods, titration methods such as Karl Fischer, High Performance Liquid Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry.
  • Proficiency with Ion Chromatography, Inductively Coupled Plasma as well enzymatic and biochemical assays is desired.
  • Practical experience with data processing software is desired.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, scientific creativity, strong interpersonal skills, and independent thought.
  • Proven ability to plan, organize and execute research projects, analyze qualitative and quantitative data, and generate scientific documentation.
  • Ability for problem solving and trouble shooting. Able to identify problems; apply structured and focused methodology to identify root cause using data.
  • Computer literacy and proficiency are required.
  • Excellent wet chemistry skills including pipetting, volumetric measurements, serial dilutions, use of laboratory balances.
  • Strong preference will be given to applicants with a basic understanding of PCR and related chemistry.
