Position Summary:

Software managers are responsible for managing teams of software engineers and project managers who, in turn, manage the development, release, and maintenance of commercial and/or internal software. They manage software life cycles, including requirements gathering, development, testing, release, and maintenance of software applications according to BioFire Diagnostics’ business needs. They lead and manage the work of others, and are responsible for building and motivating project teams. They contribute to decisions to prioritize software projects and schedule resources to meet the prioritized schedule. They are expected to collaborate effectively with people of all levels across the company. When necessary software managers will work with their department director to negotiate for timelines, resources, and priorities within the software group and across other groups in the company.

Software managers are excellent project managers. They are expected to mentor project managers on their team, helping them develop leadership experience and skills needed to successfully complete complex software development projects.

Software managers understand department and company goals. They take responsibility for achieving these goals and motivate others to do the same. They work with department directors and business stakeholders to understand the current and future needs of teams that they support. They also understand the regulatory environment in which they operate and ensure that all software is compliant with applicable standards, regulations, and best practices.



  1. Perform all work in compliance with company policy and within the guidelines of BioFire Diagnostics’ Quality System.
  2. Understand BioFire Diagnostics’ mission, values, and core technologies.
  3. Understand the enterprise systems used by BioFire Diagnostics.
  4. Lead project teams through software development projects and implementations.
  5. Represent the customer in reviewing software features and design decisions.
  6. Set and communicate priorities and milestones for the team.
  7. Identify obstacles to the team and manage solutions.
  8. Understand and accomplish department goals.
  9. Advise leadership on best practices and areas for improvement.
  10. Plan for the growth needs of their team
  11. Mentor and support the education and experience of team members
  12. Continually update knowledge and skills
  13. Lead improvements to existing systems.
  14. Plan, develop, and maintain disaster recovery plans for the systems within their responsibility.
  15. Participate as needed in the Change Advisory Board.


Studies and Experience:

  • Requires a Bachelors degree in an engineering, scientific, or technical field, or significant software industry experience (7 or more years).
  • 5+ years of experience managing a team of software engineers OR
  • 7+ years of experience as a software project manager OR
  • 10+ years of experience as a software engineer/software test engineer/software business analyst


Skills and Qualifications:

  • Expert planning, organization, communication, and writing skills.
  • In-depth understanding of SDLC, software engineering practices, software testing practices, and software project management
