The Embedded Software/Firmware Manager is a technical management position that will coordinate and manage  firmware and embedded software engineering personnel designing complex medical diagnostic equipment.  The manager must have a strong embedded software/firmware engineering or computer science background with experience leading other engineers developing complex mechatronic systems. Working knowledge of object-oriented design principles, the C++ language, and modern development and test practices and strategies strongly preferred.

The typical firmware team size is around ten full-time engineers plus contractors. Leading a team of engineers in a management capacity is NOT a requirement, but the ideal candidate will have been regarded as a technical or team leader in previous positions. Prior experience working in a multidisciplinary environment will be very beneficial, as this role works closely with Electrical, Mechanical, and Integration engineering functions. The candidate must be prepared to help guide technical decisions within the projects, as well as shape the methods and processes used to perform static analysis and automated testing on projects that are maintained for 10+ years.

 

MAIN ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Supports the research or the development of marketable products and technologies by organizing, assigning responsibilities, elaborating staffing plan and coordinating group activities by influencing key technical or business decisions.
  • Is accountable for management and development of people, mentor key individuals, ensuring the integrity of the performance management process and individual development/training plans; also recommends salary evolutions.
  • Acts as an arbitrator between conflicting objectives by implementing priorities and moderates the interactions between team members and with the rest of the department and with project and/or program management.
  • Coordinates initiatives involving other departments and assures effective communication.
  • Contributes to or is delegated by his/her manager to the lead of the creation or modification of procedures in accordance to department needs.
  • Coordinates, with the other technical disciplines, the integration activities of complex electro-mechanical instruments.
  • Ensures proper resource allocation, fostering collaboration within hardware engineering and with interfacing functions, including establishing and managing the budget of the function.
  • Accountable for the technical output of 3rd party development contractors which includes all planning and coordination activities for the documentation, design, development and testing of instrument firmware and embedded software.
  • Encourages best practices in engineering design and lead the utilization of advanced software engineering theories, methods and research techniques in product development design.
  • Complies with the design control guidelines and Quality requirements within the company’s regulated ISO\ FDA environment.

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • BS/MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent, with a minimum of 8+ years’ work experience designing mechatronic equipment / software.
  • Experience with leading teams of engineers.
  • Ability to lead and direct others in a technical environment, and collaboratively work with members across multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Ability to lead and influence in a matrix organization.
  • Strong planning and leadership skills, with proven ability to meet business objectives.
  • Strong business acumen in addition to project management and technical skills.
  • Experience in an ISO/ FDA regulated environment is highly desirable.
