Senior Director, Software Engineering

The Sr. Director of Software Engineering is a senior management position reporting to the Vice President of System Development.  The primary mission is to oversee the development, implementation, support, and continuous improvement of bioMerieux software solutions that are part of the bioMerieux Microbiology products portfolio. 

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Manage and lead multiple teams of experienced Software Engineering Managers, Software Project Leads, Software Engineers, and Business Analysts with clear technical vision for existing and future products. 

  • Ensures the management of individual and collective performance and reward of all employees in the function, as well as assures training, development, and mentoring of employees. 

  • Encourage best practices in software engineering and product design; including Test Automation, Test-Driven Development/Test-Driven Requirements, Refactoring, CI/CD and Re-architecting. Foster the application of Agile and Lean Methods to product development processes. 

  • You will drive the software engineering people strategy with an emphasis on attraction, retention, and building a diverse and inclusive team of strong software engineers and future leaders. 

  • Build a strong engineering team and positive engineering culture  

  • Manage departmental budget and resources including maintenance of long term human capital strategy that aligns with the needs of the business. 

  • Participate in strategic planning with program directors, other engineering senior directors, and technical leads. 

  • Foster collaboration with other engineering departments involved in the development and support of our products. 

  • Responsible for relationship management, both inside and outside the organization, managing contracts with partners in order to provide added value to the department 

 

Skills/Qualifications: 

  • BS/MS, or equivalent, in Computer Science or related engineering field with 12 years of experience in software development 

  • 5-8 years of experience managing people with 5+ years of managing multiple managers/teams 

  • Confident and empathetic leader of leaders with demonstrated ability to build, motivate and retain high performance engineering teams while leading engineering culture change. 

  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a global (cross cultural) team environment 

  • Ability to bring energy and enthusiasm to the job and organization 

  • History of taking smart, calculated risks and aggressively leading through organizational change 

  • Comfortable taking a vague notion, working with internal stakeholders to refine it to actionable plans and execute on those plans 

  • Demonstrated history of implementing and managing significant software development projects 

  • Experience in an ISO/FDA regulated environment is desirable.
